What Will My Child Learn in Creative Writing Class?
The curriculum, developed by education and creative writing experts, builds three things: imagination, storytelling technique and clear writing.
- Imaginative thinking: coming up with original ideas, characters and settings
- Storytelling techniques: building a strong opening, rising tension and a satisfying ending
- Writing strategies: planning, drafting and improving a piece, with richer vocabulary and varied sentences
- Different genres: fiction, poetry and non-fiction, so students find their own voice
How Does Creative Writing Help With School English?
Children who write creatively every week pick up new words, try different sentence structures and learn how a good story is built. These are the same skills that composition and continuous writing in PSLE and O-Level English reward. Read more in our guide on how creative writing helps your child’s English.
How Are the Classes Taught?
- Project-based learning: every lesson builds towards each student’s own book, so progress is real and visible
- Interactive workshops: students work with peers, swap ideas and give each other feedback
- Presentations: students read and present their writing, which builds speaking confidence too
Because Speech Academy Asia specialises in public speaking, our writers do not just write well. They learn to share their ideas out loud with confidence.
What Makes Our Creative Writing Classes Different?
Most writing classes stop at the page. Ours bring in Speech Academy Asia’s own trademarked methods, so students write with more power and share their work with confidence:
- Speech Linguistic Patterns™ (SLP): the language patterns great speakers use, such as repetition, vivid comparisons and rhetorical questions, applied to writing that grabs the reader.
- The I.P.A.D story structure: Intrigue, Problem, Address, Delight. A simple frame for stories with a gripping opening, real tension and a satisfying ending.
- Language Memory Programming Semantics™ (LMPS): visualisation and memory techniques that help students plan stories and remember new vocabulary.
- Neuro Somatics™: breathing and posture habits that calm nerves when students read their work aloud.
Who Teaches the Creative Writing Course?
The course is run in collaboration with WriteHaus Asia, a creative agency offering branding, marketing and publication services in Singapore and Indonesia, with an education arm that provides enrichment programmes and runs Montessori schools.
It is led by Ms Durga Poonambalam, author of Fandi: Honour and Sacrifice, who brings years of experience and a real passion for helping young writers grow.
What Will My Child Take Away?
- More creativity: the freedom to explore new ideas and perspectives
- Stronger writing: structured lessons and regular practice for school and beyond
- Confidence: sharing work and joining discussions builds confidence in writing and speaking
- A finished book: a real piece of work they can hold, and be proud of
