What Is the Rainbow Friends Programme?

Rainbow Friends is an individualised, feedback-based programme that focuses on the skills that matter most to each child. We created it to reach out to the special needs community and give children a safe space to learn and grow.

It also gives parents a well-earned break. While your child learns in a safe, supportive environment, you get a little time for yourself.

What Will My Child Learn?

Each child works on goals chosen for them, across four areas:

  • Communication: expressing needs, wants and ideas, and taking turns in a conversation
  • Social-emotional learning: recognising and naming feelings, coping with frustration and getting along with others
  • Functional literacy: reading and using the everyday words, signs and instructions children meet at home, in school and outside
  • Confidence: speaking up in small, safe steps, so each success builds on the last

How Are Rainbow Friends Classes Run?

  • Individual feedback: trainers watch how each child responds and give feedback on their own goals, not a fixed syllabus
  • A calm, predictable routine: a clear structure helps children feel safe and ready to try
  • Small steps and lots of encouragement: activities are broken down so every child can succeed, then build up gradually

Is Rainbow Friends a Form of Therapy?

No. Rainbow Friends is an enrichment class, not speech therapy or occupational therapy. It gives children regular, structured practice in a supportive group setting, and it works well alongside any therapy your child already receives. If your child has a therapist, we are happy to keep their goals in mind.

What Makes Rainbow Friends Different?

Rainbow Friends is built on Speech Academy Asia’s own trademarked teaching methods, developed over more than a decade of teaching communication. Our trainers adapt them to each child:

  • Neuro Somatics™: simple breathing and posture habits that help children feel calm and in control. Because the body and emotions affect each other, a settled body makes it easier to speak up.
  • Language Memory Programming Semantics™ (LMPS): made for children who learn best by moving, seeing and feeling. Visual and hands-on memory techniques help new words and routines stick.
  • Speech Linguistic Patterns™ (SLP): simple, repeatable language patterns that help children turn thoughts into clear sentences, one small step at a time.

Who Are Our Trainers?

Our team includes trainers with special education experience:

  • Trainer Jacklyn is a former educational therapist who has supported children with dyslexia and different learning needs. She holds a Degree in Psychology.
  • Trainer Amir has taught and coached at Eden School, APSN Tanglin School and Assumption Pathway School, and holds a Master of Education from NIE.

    Sensory Integration

Children with Special Needs will be encouraged to use tactile sensory stimulation tools to improve tactile defensiveness or reduce sensory-seeking behaviour. Tactile sensory activities are also incorporated to improve sensory integration in this Special Needs-Focused Programme.

    Social Interaction and Communication Skills

Facilitated Social Interaction in our Special Needs-Focused Programme is a segment in which trainers identify students who can potentially interact with a friend who has similar engagement levels. Trainers and facilitators facilitate interaction among identified pairs using interactive tools. Students will then be encouraged to practise aspects of general communication such as eye contact, turn-taking, and the use of appropriate situational phrases.

    Social Emotional Learning and Regulation

The social interaction development segment of our Special Needs-Focused Programme allows students to learn important techniques that help them recognise and identify their emotions. They will then learn how to regulate the emotions they have identified.

    Fine and Gross Motor Skills

In this segment of our Special Needs-Focused Programme, students will be engaged in activities, with the use of appropriate tools, that improve and involve movement and coordination of the arms, legs, and other large body parts. These may include writing skills.
